Setting SMART Objectives

by Sean Park on March 1, 2010

Objectives.  We set them as often, and perhaps as unconsciously, as we make choices.  It’s one of those things that happens thoughtlessly, but that one could be incredibly intentional about.  Actively recognizing each moment at which you or your colleagues are setting objectives is a big first step in making each subsequent experience an opportunity to succeed and improve.  Simply put, if you don’t know that you setting a goal, then you surely will not know if you succeed in achieving it.  Once you are actively recognizing these objective-setting moments, whether through conscious effort or simple circumstance, the natural question that arises next is ‘how do I set good objectives?’  Setting good objectives begins with correctly understanding what objectives are.

Unlike goals, which are broader and more directional in nature, objectives are measurable, concrete and attainable targets.   The outcome or achievement of an objective can be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’  Objectives are highly effective in bringing focus to the task or project at hand.  Well-written, ‘SMART’ objectives will always have the following elements:

  • Specific – What exactly needs to be accomplished? Break down the end state to its basic parts and hone in on applicable, specific details.
  • Measurable – Is the outcome measurable? Is there a metric that represents the desired degree of change?  Notice that this will naturally involve quantitative measurement over qualitative measurement.
  • Achievable – Is the objective realistic and within reasonable bounds of expectation and attainability? This requires examining allocated resources, time frame, and surrounding circumstances.
  • Relevant – Does the desired outcome of the objective fit with the overall short- and long-term goal?  Can stakeholders easily understand the purpose of the objective?
  • Time-Bound – Is the anticipated time for completion clearly stated? In other words, is there a deadline?
